Stan Alves OAM is a master communicator whose multifaceted career has taken him from elite sport to senior business leadership and back again. A former AFL coach, elite athlete, respected media personality and successful businessman, Stan draws powerful parallels between sport and business to help organisations build high-performing, resilient teams.

Appointed Senior Coach of the St Kilda Football Club in 1994, Stan inherited a club that had won just one premiership in 97 years and was facing declining performance and financial instability. Over five years, he led a remarkable transformation.

Under his leadership, St Kilda reached two Final Series, won the Ansett Cup Pre-Season Premiership (its first silverware in 30 years), and made its first Grand Final appearance in 31 years. Thirteen players earned State of Origin honours, one secured consecutive Brownlow Medals, and club membership grew to 25,000 as the organisation returned to financial strength. Stan became St Kilda’s second-longest serving coach and was recognised as 1997 AFL Coach of the Year and Coach of the All Australian Team.

Beyond football, Stan has held senior leadership roles in business management, development and marketing. As Company Director of Verified Financial Planning Pty Ltd, he oversaw up to 40 consultants and investment advisers. He later served as General Manager, Sales and Financial Planning at IOOF Financial Group during a period of significant growth, with funds under management increasing from $500 million to more than $2 billion.

Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2008 for service to Australian Rules Football and the community, Stan continues to contribute widely. He is a Coaching Ambassador for the AFL, President of the Australian Football Coaches Association, Ambassador for Whitelion, an Australia Day Ambassador, and Patron of several charitable organisations.

Having spoken to hundreds of businesses, educational institutions and sporting organisations — including many of Australia’s most recognised brands — Stan is known for his engaging, practical and entertaining presentations. He shares the coaching principles that develop individual talent while guiding teams towards the achievement of a common goal.
