Gene Miles is a celebrated Australian rugby league player, renowned for his skill, versatility and leadership on the field. A dominant centre during the 1980s and 1990s, he was particularly noted for his passing ability and trademark one-handed off-load, earning him recognition as one of the game’s finest players.

Miles began his career with Wynnum-Manly in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership in 1980 and made his State of Origin debut the following year. He was one of seven Queensland-based players selected for the 1982 Kangaroo Tour to Great Britain, a squad famously known as “The Invincibles,” and made his Test debut in 1983. He also participated in the 1986 Kangaroo Tour, playing in all six Test matches against Papua New Guinea, Great Britain and France.

He joined the Brisbane Broncos for their inaugural 1988 season, playing in their first-ever match. Transitioning to the forwards, Miles became one of Australia’s finest second-rowers, captaining the Broncos to their first play-offs appearance in 1990 and winning the Dally M Captain of the Year award. He played 72 first-grade games for the Broncos, 14 Tests for Australia, and 19 State of Origin matches for Queensland.

In 1991, Miles joined Wigan in the United Kingdom, playing 29 matches and helping the club secure a treble of Championship, Challenge Cup and Premiership titles. Following his retirement, he pursued a media career with Channel Nine and continued to contribute to the game as Queensland State of Origin Chairman of Selectors in 2001. He is now Executive Chairman of the non-profit Former Origin Greats (FOGS).

Miles’ outstanding career has been widely recognised: in 2000 he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal; in 2007 he was named among the Brisbane Broncos’ 20 greatest players; in 2008 he was listed among Australia’s 100 Greatest Players (1908–2007) and selected in the Queensland Rugby League’s Team of the Century.
