Michael Klug AM is one of Australia’s most experienced and respected specialists in negotiation, mediation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR). With more than three decades advising and teaching in this field, and 35 years’ experience as a senior litigator, Michael brings unparalleled depth, authority and practical insight to the peaceful resolution of complex disputes.
Michael served three terms as Managing Partner of the Brisbane office of Clayton Utz, one of Australia’s leading law firms, and after 38 years with the firm now practises as a consultant. He is currently focused on his national and international negotiation, mediation and ADR practice, advising clients across both the public and private sectors on high-stakes and complex negotiations.
A recognised leader by his peers, Michael is consistently listed in Best Lawyers Australia and has been named Lawyer of the Year in his jurisdiction for ADR by the Australian Financial Review Best Lawyers Survey. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology, where he lectured for many years in ADR within the Faculty of Law.
Beyond his legal practice, Michael has held significant leadership roles, including Chair of Queensland Rail, Chair of Autism Queensland Limited, President of the Brisbane Club, and Director or Chair on 17 boards over the course of his career. In recognition of his contribution to the law and the community, Michael was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2014 for significant service to alternative dispute resolution.
Michael has also endowed the annual Michael Klug Negotiation Prize, awarded in perpetuity to an individual who demonstrates excellence in the peaceful resolution of conflict.
