James Dunn is a leading Australian finance journalist and media commentator, known for his clear, engaging analysis across print, digital, radio and television. A respected freelance writer, James contributes to The Australian, Asia Asset Management, Insto, The Investing Times and thebull.com.au, and is a regular finance voice across major Australian broadcast networks.

He is also a weekly sports columnist for backpagelead.com.au.

James was the founding editor of Shares magazine, driving one of Australia’s most successful magazine launches. His work has appeared in BRW, Personal Investor, The Age and Management Today, and he has held senior roles including Personal Investment Editor at The Australian and Editor of investorweb.com.au.

He is the author of Share Investing for Dummies, which has been published in multiple editions and formats, and was researcher for Robert Gottliebsen’s bestseller The Ten Best & Ten Worst Business Decisions of Australian CEOs.

James delivers daily finance reports on Melbourne’s 3AW and serves as Australian business correspondent on New Zealand’s Newstalk ZB. He co-presented the nationally syndicated talkback program Dollars at Work, is a weekly commentator on Sky Business, and has appeared on The Panel, Four Corners and Today Tonight.

Born in Ararat, western Victoria, James holds Bachelor of Letters and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Melbourne and is a Fellow of the Williamson Community Leadership Program. He also sits on the editorial committee for Leadership Victoria’s biannual magazine, Leadership.

In 1984, James famously won two BMWs on Sale of the Century, using the proceeds to fund overseas travel — and his first share portfolio. The portfolio did not survive the 1987 crash, an experience that set him on the path to becoming one of Australia’s most recognisable finance journalists.

James captivated an audience of non-financial people with a passionate, eloquent and at times, humorous account of the current political and economic climate in Australia and around the world. He was truly engaging and had the audience on the edge of their seats. It was refreshing to hear how he cut through to the issues without the spin and was prepared to provide his opinions. Many participants commented that they have never heard anyone be so passionate about statistics and economics and yet be able to talk about these issues in an easy to understand manner. He did a great job. Anglicare Australia
