Xavier Campbell is a respected sports executive and transformational leader, best known for serving as Chief Executive Officer of the Essendon Football Club — becoming the youngest CEO in the club’s history and the youngest in the AFL at the time of his appointment.
Taking on the role during one of the most turbulent periods in Australian sporting history, Xavier’s tenure began amid the extensive and complex ASADA supplements investigation. In what he has described as a baptism of fire, his immediate priority was to guide the Club through crisis with integrity, stability and long-term vision. His leadership helped galvanise Essendon’s playing group, staff, members and commercial partners, laying the foundations for the Club’s recovery and renewal.
Beyond crisis management, Xavier drove a comprehensive strategic reset. He led significant structural and cultural reform, implemented industry-leading risk, governance and compliance frameworks, and articulated a bold vision for Essendon to become the most inclusive, respected and successful sporting organisation in Australia.
The transformation delivered measurable results. By 2022, Essendon’s membership had grown to 84,500 (up from 53,500 at the start of his tenure), the Club had qualified for finals four times, secured an AFLW licence, completed a $22.5 million expansion of its high-performance facility at The Hangar in Tullamarine, and eliminated a debt that had peaked at $12 million in 2016.
Xavier was instrumental in securing and retaining major commercial partners including KIA, AMART and Fujitsu General. He also led the complex player compensation process relating to the supplements matter and played a pivotal role in retaining suspended players during a period of extraordinary uncertainty.
Recognised for his progressive and innovative mindset, Xavier broadened Essendon’s business model beyond traditional football operations, incorporating education initiatives, medical services and the establishment of a first-of-its-kind investment fund — positioning the Club as a diversified and future-focused organisation.
Prior to becoming CEO, Xavier held senior commercial and strategic roles within Essendon, including General Manager, Special Projects and Commercial Partnerships and Head of Commercial Partnerships, Merchandise and Licensing. Earlier in his career, he worked with Dynamic Sports & Entertainment Group and global agency Octagon.
In 2014, he was one of only six individuals worldwide shortlisted for the inaugural Global Leaders in Sport Under 40 (Leadership category). A former premiership player with Sturt Football Club in the SANFL, Xavier combines elite sporting experience with executive leadership expertise.
He holds an Executive MBA from INSEAD, completed in 2019, and grew up in Echuca, Victoria. Xavier is married with two children.
Today, Xavier speaks on crisis leadership, governance reform, cultural transformation, stakeholder management and leading through sustained scrutiny — offering rare insights from one of the most challenging chapters in modern Australian sport.
