Quick Contact

Wally Lewis AM is universally regarded as one of the greatest players and captains in Rugby League history. Tough, uncompromising and brilliantly skilful, he dominated the game through the 1980s and early 1990s, redefining leadership and inspiring a generation of Queenslanders.

From the moment he stepped onto the field in the inaugural State of Origin match in 1980, a new era in Queensland belief was born. Almost overnight, Lewis became “The King”, later earning legendary titles including “The Emperor of Lang Park” and “The High Priest of the Spectacular”.

Over a 15-year first grade career, Lewis made 301 appearances across five clubs — Valleys (135), Wynnum-Manly (76), Wakefield Trinity (10), Brisbane Broncos (46) and Gold Coast Seagulls (34). Remarkably, he never once played reserve grade football.

His State of Origin record remains extraordinary. Lewis played 31 matches for Queensland, captaining the Maroons from 1981 to 1991 and winning 19 games. He missed only two matches through injury before retiring from Origin in 1990, and later coached the Queensland side from 1992 to 1994. He won a record eight State of Origin Man of the Match awards — a benchmark that still stands. A bronze statue now stands in his honour at Lang Park, and the Player of the Series award is named the Wally Lewis Medal.

On the international stage, Lewis was equally dominant. He represented Australia in 33 Test matches between 1981 and 1991 and captained the Kangaroos 23 times from 1984. In 1986 he became only the second Queenslander to captain an Australian Kangaroo Tour to Great Britain and France, leading the team through an undefeated Ashes campaign. He is uniquely a member of three undefeated Australian touring sides to Britain.

Among his many accolades, Lewis was named Best Player in the World, selected in the Australian Kangaroos Team of the Century at five-eighth, inducted as a Rugby League Immortal and honoured in the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1987 for his service to Rugby League and inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Before rugby league, Lewis was a member of the 1977 Australian Schoolboys rugby union team alongside future internationals including the Ella brothers and Michael O’Connor.

Following his playing career, Wally transitioned successfully into media, serving as a news and sports presenter with the Nine Network in Queensland, anchoring the 6pm bulletin and working as a commentator and panel member with FOX Sports.

In 2009, he published his autobiography Out of the Shadows, a candid and powerful account of his life after football, including his battle with depression and epilepsy, and his courageous journey back to health and the television screen.

Today, Wally Lewis is one of Australia’s most sought-after sporting speakers and Masters of Ceremonies. Drawing on a career defined by resilience, leadership and high performance under pressure, he captivates audiences with stories from the biggest stages in sport. Professional, personable and quietly charismatic, Wally remains — as ever — a crowd favourite.
