Quick Contact
Peter FitzSimons is one of Australia’s most recognisable and engaging public figures — an author, journalist, broadcaster, former Wallaby and long-standing columnist for The Sydney Morning Herald. A dynamic performer on stage and in the media, he is renowned for his storytelling, sharp wit, and deep insight into Australian history, sport, politics and culture.
Peter speaks four languages and has co-hosted national radio programs, conducted interviews around the world, and spoken with some of the most influential figures of our time, including George Bush, Diego Maradona, Sir Edmund Hillary, Jodie Foster and Carl Lewis. He has interviewed every Australian Prime Minister from Gough Whitlam to Julia Gillard and remains one of the country’s most compelling live interviewers and commentators.
A prolific and best-selling non-fiction writer, Peter was Australia’s highest-selling non-fiction author in both 2001 and 2004. His acclaimed biographies include World Cup-winning Wallaby captains Nick Farr-Jones and John Eales, former Opposition Leader Kim Beazley, boxer Les Darcy, aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, war heroine Nancy Wake, and Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson. His book Kokoda cemented his reputation as one of Australia’s foremost narrative historians.
Born on a farm at Peat’s Ridge, Peter was educated at Knox Grammar School before completing an Arts degree at the University of Sydney, majoring in government and political science. He played international rugby for Australia, earning seven Test caps, and spent five years playing professionally in France and Italy, where he learned French, Italian and Spanish.
Since joining The Sydney Morning Herald full-time in 1989, Peter has been one of its most popular and influential columnists. Andrew Denton has described him as “Australia’s finest sports journalist”.
On stage, Peter is a natural performer — humorous, provocative and endlessly entertaining. His life stories include fighting a Sumo wrestler at the Sydney Opera House, dancing on ice with Torvill and Dean, chairing the Australian Republican Movement, and being the only Wallaby ever sent off against the All Blacks (unjustly, he insists). He brings intellect, energy and unmistakable Australian character to every appearance.
