Professor Peter Doherty AC is a world-renowned immunologist and Nobel Prize winner, celebrated for his groundbreaking research on how the immune system recognises virus-infected cells. In addition to the Nobel Prize, he has received the Paul Ehrlich Prize (Germany), the Gairdner International Award (Canada), and the Lasker Award for Basic Science (USA), shared with Rolf Zinkernagel.

Peter’s research has been supported by competitive grants from the National Institutes of Health (USA), the National Health and Medical Research Council (Australia), and institutional funding at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Australian National University. He is a Fellow or Foreign Associate of the Australian, UK, US, and Russian Academies of Science, as well as the French, US, UK, and Australian Academies of Medicine.

Over his career, Peter has published more than 500 research papers and reviews, holds an h-index of 81, and has received over 20 honorary doctorates. His remarkable contributions to science and the community have been recognised through numerous accolades, including Australian of the Year, Companion of the Order of Australia (1997), being named a living National Treasure, and having his image featured on a postage stamp. Fellowships, streets, and buildings in Edinburgh and Melbourne are also named in his honour.
