Neary Ty is an award-winning television journalist at the Nine Network and the proud daughter of Cambodian refugees who survived the Khmer Rouge regime. Born and raised in Australia, Neary’s journey is one of resilience, determination, and breaking barriers. She built her career from the ground up, earning a Bachelor of Media and Communication (Journalism), completing an internship at Nine News Melbourne, and progressing through roles as News Librarian, Assistant to the Chief of Staff, and Producer for both local and national news bulletins.
In 2014, Neary became Nine News Melbourne’s first Cambodian reporter, covering major events including bushfires, devastating floods, the Bourke Street tragedy, Harry and Meghan’s royal tour, and lockdown protests. She has broken high-profile crime stories, counter-terror raids, and exclusives, earning multiple award nominations and commendations from the Melbourne Press Club for her investigative reporting on Victoria’s youth justice system. In 2024, Neary was awarded the Crimestoppers Mersina Halvagis Award for her outstanding contribution to crime prevention, and in 2022, she was inducted into the Mentone Girls’ Grammar Remarkable Women Hall of Fame.
Beyond journalism, Neary is an engaging and professional Master of Ceremonies and keynote speaker. She has hosted galas, corporate dinners, charity events, and awards nights for audiences exceeding 1,000 guests. Her warmth, energy, and journalistic expertise make her a trusted panel facilitator and moderator for discussions on current affairs, media, and crime reporting. Neary also speaks to disadvantaged youth, university students, and professional groups, sharing her story as the daughter of refugees and her experiences reporting on some of Melbourne and Australia’s most challenging news events.
Outside of work, Neary cherishes her family and three young children. She is passionate about shaping the next generation’s understanding of cultural heritage, diversity, and empathy through storytelling and lived experience.
