Monica Attard is one of Australia’s most respected journalists and broadcasters, with a career spanning nearly three decades at the ABC. Renowned for her incisive reporting, interviewing skills, and deep understanding of global affairs, Monica has covered some of the most pivotal events of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
In 1990, she was posted to Moscow as the Soviet Union collapsed, witnessing and reporting on the coup against Mikhail Gorbachev, the fall of Soviet communism, and the rise of Boris Yeltsin. She covered numerous ethnic conflicts in the former Soviet republics, including the first Chechen war. Her exceptional work during this period earned her three Walkley Awards, including the prestigious Gold Walkley, and an Order of Australia for her services to journalism.
Returning to Australia in 1994, Monica hosted PM and The World Today on ABC Radio, before creating the award-winning Sunday Profile, a program known for its in-depth interviews with newsmakers across the country and internationally. Her work on Sunday Profile earned her two additional Walkley Awards for Best Broadcast Interviewing.
Monica later hosted Media Watch on ABC TV and has worked with CNN International. She holds a law degree and is the creator and former Managing Editor of The Global Mail. Transitioning into academia, she served as Head of Journalism at the UTS School of Communication and was appointed Co-Director of the UTS Centre for Media Transition, mentoring the next generation of journalists and shaping the future of media practice.
