Michael Klim is one of Australia’s most celebrated swimmers and a three-time Olympian, renowned for his world-class performances and enduring impact on the sport. At just 18, he was named Australian Swimming Rookie of the Year in 1995, marking the start of a professional career that would see him rise to global prominence. Klim first made his mark on the world stage at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, winning a bronze medal in his Olympic debut. In 1997, he broke the world record in the 100m butterfly and was named World Swimmer of the Year at the age of 20.
Klim’s career continued with exceptional performances at international competitions. At the 1998 FINA World Championships in Perth, he won seven medals in seven events, including four golds, one of the most outstanding feats by an Australian at an international swim meet. He followed this with a similarly remarkable performance at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, again winning seven medals, including four golds, and was named Australian Swimmer of the Year.
The 2000 Sydney Olympics saw Klim deliver on home soil, winning two gold and two silver medals. He played a pivotal role in Australia’s thrilling 4x100m freestyle relay victory, delivering a world-record lead-off swim, and later helped set another world record in the 4x200m freestyle relay, securing his second gold medal. After a two-year break prompted by injury, Klim returned to compete at the 2004 Athens Olympics, winning his sixth Olympic medal as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay. He continued to shine at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, earning gold in the men’s 4x100m medley relay, silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay and 100m butterfly, and bronze in the 50m butterfly.
Klim briefly returned to competitive swimming in 2011 with hopes of reaching the 2012 London Olympics, reaching the semi-finals in both the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly at the Australian Championships before announcing his retirement once again. In recognition of his exceptional career, Michael was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2020.
