Melody is an award-winning journalist, broadcaster, environmental advocate, and author whose career spans more than two decades across television, radio, and international media. Born in England and raised in Cornwall, she emigrated to Australia in the late 1970s and has since become a trusted voice in science, environment, and nature reporting, working with the ABC, Channel 9, Network 10, Network 7, and CNN’s International World Report. She is an honorary member of CNN’s International Professional Program.
Melody has won numerous accolades for her journalism, including the Better Hearing Australia Award for Best Presenter and the Archbishop’s Award for Outstanding Journalism, and was runner-up in the Australian Voiceless Awards recognising excellence in animal welfare reporting. She has also presented nightly weather reports and worked extensively in radio with Melbourne’s 3AW.
In addition to media, Melody served as Media and Communication Manager for the Australian Government’s Bureau of Meteorology, where her work during the 2019–2020 Victorian Bushfires earned her an Australia Day Merit Award for community service.
Melody’s experiences with extreme domestic violence inspired her memoir, highlighting her journey to resilience, strength, and hope through connection with nature — most notably a wild, injured, solitary dolphin named Jock. She continues to advocate for marine life and survivors of domestic violence, including submitting recommendations to a South Australian Parliamentary enquiry into unexplained dolphin deaths in the Port River. In recognition of her work, two South Australian dolphins have been named in her honour.
