Marcia Hines is a legendary figure in Australian music and entertainment, widely regarded for her powerhouse voice, bold personality, and decades-long career that has made her an icon. Inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007, Marcia’s musical legacy spans over five decades, making her one of Australia’s most beloved and enduring pop stars.
Her journey began at the age of 16 when she arrived in Australia from Boston to join the cast of the rock musical Hair in 1970. A year later, she made history as the world’s first Black Mary Magdalene in the Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Her distinctive vocal style and undeniable charisma quickly secured her a place in Australian music history.
In 1975, Marcia released her debut single Fire and Rain, which set the stage for a successful recording career that included seven multi-platinum albums and countless hit singles like Ooh Child and Your Love Still Brings Me to My Knees. She became Australia’s top-selling artist and was crowned Queen of Pop three times. Over the years, Marcia’s career has taken her from international tours with the Daly Wilson Big Band to hosting her own national TV show, cementing her as a household name.
But Marcia’s journey is not just one of musical success. After a life-changing diagnosis of diabetes in 1986, Marcia turned her health around through fitness and a commitment to mental and physical wellbeing, making her an advocate for healthy living.
Her career experienced a renaissance in the 1990s with a return to recording and performing. In 2001, Marcia celebrated her 30th anniversary as a professional singer with the release of DIVA—an anthology of her greatest songs. In 2007, she was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, an honour that recognised her immense contribution to Australian music and culture.
Beyond her music career, Marcia is an author and mentor, using her platform to inspire and uplift others. She is known for her work as a judge on Australian Idol, where she helped shape the careers of countless emerging artists. In 2009, she was awarded an AM in the Australia Day Honours for her contribution to the entertainment industry and her charitable work.
