Julie McCrossin is a veteran Australian broadcaster, journalist, podcaster, and MC with over 20 years of experience across ABC Radio National, ABC TV, and Network Ten. She is widely recognised for her work as presenter of Life Matters on Radio National and as team leader on the comedy quiz show Good News Week, where her sharp wit and insightful commentary left a lasting mark on Australian television.
A pioneer of inclusive media, Julie has reported on events ranging from the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras to the ANZAC Day Parade and even appeared as the silent clown “Plain Jane” on Play School. She is proud to live in a country where she can celebrate diversity and be part of such iconic productions.
Julie became active in gay liberation at Sydney University in 1974, participating in demonstrations and advocacy that contributed to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in New South Wales in 1984. She is a long-term advocate for marriage equality and, following a stage four HPV-related throat cancer diagnosis in 2013, married her partner of over 20 years, Melissa Gibson, in Manhattan in 2014. The couple are now proud grandparents to Billie and Jude.
As a cancer survivor, Julie has become a prominent advocate for patient support and health education. She hosts the podcasts The Thing About Cancer and The Thing About Advanced Cancer for Cancer Council NSW and has co-produced a range of educational video series in partnership with hospitals and advocacy groups, covering topics from patient communication to improving the radiotherapy experience. She is also a member of Cancer Voices SA.
Julie holds qualifications in the arts, education, and law. In 2019, she was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the community, particularly through LGBTIQ advocacy and contributions to broadcast media. Today, Julie continues to inform, inspire, and empower audiences with her experience, courage, and unwavering commitment to inclusion, equality, and storytelling that matters.
