Helen Kapalos is an acclaimed journalist, documentary filmmaker, and sought-after MC, host, and keynote speaker. A proud Victorian, she has also served two terms on the state government-appointed board of Federation Square and as Victorian Multicultural Commissioner.
Helen’s journalism career began in 1994 with ABC Radio in Newcastle and expanded through multicultural broadcaster SBS, where she won a national scholarship. She has worked across commercial radio and television, including NBN, where she wrote, directed, and produced an award-winning documentary on the closure of BHP in 1998.
At the Nine Network, Helen covered major breaking news stories including the Waterfall train disaster and the Sydney Gang rape trial, contributed to the 2004 Athens Olympics coverage, and hosted Nightline. She later joined Network Ten as co-anchor on News at Five, covering live national events such as the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires and the Christchurch earthquake. Helen has worked for all three major commercial networks in Australia as well as two public broadcasters, most recently hosting Today Tonight and reporting for Sunday Night at the Seven Network.
Returning to filmmaking, Helen was Executive Producer of A Life Of Its Own (2016), a documentary exploring the truth about medical marijuana. She holds a Master’s in Journalism and champions reporting that prioritises truth, integrity, and amplifying unheard voices.
Helen is an active ambassador for Victoria, the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, and serves on advisory committees including the Big Issue. A passionate sports fan, she supports the Hawks and Liverpool FC.
