Dr Derek Muller is a highly acclaimed science communicator, educator, and filmmaker, best known as the creator of Veritasium, a science-focused YouTube channel with almost a billion views and over eight million subscribers. Through his captivating videos, Derek brings complex scientific concepts to life, using experiments, expert interviews, and engaging visuals to make science clear, accessible, and entertaining for millions of viewers worldwide.

Derek’s work has earned him a prominent place in the global science communication community. He is a presenter on Catalyst, ABC TV’s renowned science program, where he has reported scientific stories from across the globe since joining the show in 2011. He is also known for his work as the host of award-winning documentaries such as Uranium: Twisting the Dragon’s Tail (PBS) and Vitamania (International Networks), and for his role as a correspondent on Netflix’s Bill Nye Saves the World.

In addition to his work on television, Derek is a sought-after speaker and educator. He has hosted and presented numerous international science events, including the Google Science Fair Awards and the March for Science on the Washington Mall, and he has appeared on major networks such as the Discovery Channel, History Channel, and the BBC. Derek’s ability to simplify and communicate complex scientific concepts has earned him the prestigious 2016 Richtmyer Memorial Lecture Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT).

Derek’s academic background is equally impressive. He holds a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics from Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, and a PhD in Physics Education Research from the University of Sydney, where he focused on designing effective multimedia for physics education. His research on addressing misconceptions first to engage audiences has influenced how science is taught and communicated worldwide. In addition to his teaching experience at both the high school and university levels, Derek has published in several international science education journals and presented at numerous educational conferences around the world.

As the Creative Director and CEO of ThoughtWorks, a position he has held since 2010, Derek continues to explore the intersection of science, technology, and education. His passion for science communication also extends to the development of educational tools, such as Snatoms, a magnetic molecule-making kit designed to teach molecular science in an interactive, hands-on way.
