Barrie Cassidy is one of Australia’s most respected and experienced political journalists, renowned for his sharp analysis, incisive interviewing and unmistakable on-air presence. Best known as the long-running host of Insiders and Offsiders, Barrie led ABC TV’s flagship political program from its launch in 2001, building it into essential Sunday viewing for politicians, journalists and news-savvy audiences nationwide.
A storyteller at heart with more than 45 years in the media, Barrie has held some of the most influential roles in Australian political journalism. He began his career on regional newspapers before moving to Canberra in 1979 as the ABC’s federal political correspondent. In 1986 he was appointed senior press secretary and political adviser to then Prime Minister Bob Hawke — a pivotal role that deepened his insight into the workings of government and policy.
Barrie’s career has taken him around the world as a correspondent in major political capitals, including Washington during the Clinton Administration for The Australian, and later Brussels as the ABC’s Europe correspondent. Back home, he hosted Meet the Press, The Last Shout, The 7.30 Report and served as president of the Canberra Press Gallery.
An accomplished author, Barrie wrote Party Thieves, a detailed account of the 2010 federal election and the dramatic leadership upheavals that reshaped Australian politics. His award-winning commentary has earned him top industry honours, including the Quill Award for Best Columnist/Blogger in 2012.
