Prior to her singles breakthrough, Sam claimed two Grand Slam doubles titles (US Open 2005 and Roland Garros 2006) and two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles (Australian Open 2005 and Wimbledon 2008), reaching world No.1 in doubles in 2006. Since 2006, she has consistently been Australia’s No.1 female player and entered the singles top 10 globally in 2010. She is renowned for having one of the strongest serves on the women’s tour.

A Queenslander, Sam began playing tennis at eight and joined the Queensland Academy of Sport at 14, before entering the Australian Institute of Sport program at 16. Despite health setbacks, including Lyme disease and viral meningitis, she made a remarkable return to competition, achieving career-high singles results including the 2010 French Open final and multiple WTA titles.

Off the court, Sam has been recognised for her contributions to tennis and community engagement, receiving the WTA Diamond ACES Award in 2010 and having a court named in her honour at Southport’s Queens Park Tennis Centre. A long-standing member of the Australian Fed Cup team, Sam continues to inspire young athletes as a role model of resilience, focus, and excellence.
