As HG Nelson and Rampaging Roy Slaven, Greig Pickhaver and John Doyle have been embedded in the nation’s consciousness since 1986. Through iconic programmes including This Sporting Life, Club Buggery, The Channel Nine Show, Planet Norwich, The Nation Dumps, and the hugely successful Olympic broadcasts The Dream and The Ice Dream, they have created a unique and enduring voice in Australian sport and satire.
Inextricably linked with Australia’s sporting culture, Roy and HG entertained the nation every weekend for 22 years on Triple J with This Sporting Life. Their irreverent and razor-sharp commentary became essential listening for sports fans across the country.
They also delivered legendary alternative radio commentaries of AFL and Rugby League Grand Finals — affectionately known as The Festival of the Boot — and twice brought their distinctive take to Wimbledon for the ABC.
In 2008, they moved to Triple M, hosting afternoon programs in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and in 2010 they presented Route One during the FIFA World Cup.
Their first book, Pants Off, has become a cult favourite among sports fans, alongside recordings such as Wicket to Wicket, their much-loved guide to cricket.
Both Roy and HG are frequently sought by media outlets for commentary on sporting and cultural matters. HG has also written, produced and presented acclaimed documentaries and drama-documentaries, including Changi and Two Men in a Tinnie.
Highly regarded after-dinner speakers, they have appeared at events as varied as the Perth Art Directors Club Awards, the Modern Motor Magazine Best Car Awards and the Sydney Festival Country Music Concert in the Park.
In 2010, both were appointed Members of the Order of Australia in recognition of their outstanding contribution to media and charitable organisations.
As HG neatly summarises their philosophy: “Go in hard, early and often. Win the stink and win the match. And remember: in or out; it is always worth a shout!”
