Peter Bol is one of Australia’s most inspiring middle-distance runners, specialising in the 800 metres. Born in Sudan, Peter and his family arrived in Australia in 1994 on humanitarian visas, eventually settling in Perth. Initially a talented basketballer, he discovered his exceptional running ability in his teenage years and quickly made the transition to athletics.
Peter’s rapid ascent in the sport saw him make his Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games, followed by standout performances at the World Championships in London and international meets, including a personal best of 1:44 in Stockholm in 2018. His breakthrough came at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where he became the first Australian male in 53 years to compete in an Olympic 800m final, breaking the national record previously held by training partner Joseph Deng. Leading much of the race before finishing fourth, Peter captivated a nation and inspired Australian and Sudanese-Australian communities alike.
Beyond his achievements on the track, Peter Bol is celebrated for his leadership, resilience, and advocacy for inclusivity, challenging assumptions about identity and migration. His journey embodies perseverance, courage, and dedication, making him not only a remarkable athlete but a role model across Australia.
