Sir Bob Geldof is an internationally acclaimed musician, humanitarian, entrepreneur, and political activist whose career spans music, media, business, and global philanthropy. Geldof began his career as a journalist, contributing to Canada’s Georgia Straight and the UK’s New Musical Express and Melody Maker. He later formed the band The Boomtown Rats, one of the first acts of the 1976–77 punk/new wave explosion, achieving multiple hits including two UK number-one singles. He also appeared in the film adaptation of Pink Floyd’s The Wall.
Geldof’s humanitarian work began in earnest in 1984 when he co-organized Band Aid to combat the Ethiopian famine, followed by the legendary Live Aid concerts in 1985. In 2005, he produced Live 8, a global series of concerts advocating debt relief and development in Africa. His tireless activism earned him a knighthood in 1986, multiple honorary doctorates, and seven successive nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.
In addition to his musical and humanitarian achievements, Geldof has been a highly successful entrepreneur and media innovator. He co-founded the production company Planet 24, which launched The Big Breakfast, and later Ten Alps Communications, producing acclaimed documentaries and TV programs worldwide. He also founded Deckchair.com, an online travel platform, and since 2010 has been working on The 8 Mile Fund, a private equity initiative to support African development.
Geldof has remained active in music, releasing solo albums including Deep in the Heart of Nowhere, The Vegetarians of Love, and How to Write Popular Songs That Will Sell (58 ½). He continues to tour, perform, and compose while maintaining his global humanitarian efforts.
