The Hon Bob Carr is the longest-serving Premier in the history of New South Wales, holding office from 1995 to 2005. Over a decade in leadership, he reshaped the State through major advances in infrastructure, education reform and environmental conservation.
During his premiership, Mr Carr oversaw the successful delivery of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, introduced the world’s first carbon trading scheme, and established more than 350 new national parks — a conservation legacy that earned international recognition, including the World Conservation Union International Parks Merit Award.
In 2012, Mr Carr was appointed Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. In that role, he strengthened key diplomatic relationships, advanced global nuclear disarmament initiatives and contributed to securing Australia’s successful bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. His tenure reinforced Australia’s engagement across the Asia–Pacific region and on the global stage.
Following his time in federal politics, Mr Carr served as Professor of Climate and Business at the University of Technology Sydney and founded the Australia–China Relations Institute, further cementing his reputation as a leading voice in international relations and regional affairs.
A prolific and respected author, Mr Carr has written several influential books, including Diary of a Foreign Minister and Run for Your Life, offering candid reflections on politics, diplomacy and public leadership.
