World Para Surfing Champion, Bestselling Author and Keynote Speaker
Sam Bloom is a World Para Surfing Champion, a sought-after and engaging global keynote speaker and a bestselling author. In early 2013, Sam’s dream life turned into a nightmare when on holiday in Thailand she unknowingly leant against a rotten balcony railing, falling through it and crashing six metres onto the concrete below. Her accident left her paralysed from the chest down.
Broken and hopeless, Sam reached her outer limits of physical and mental suffering. But with courage and determination she made her way back from the edge, scarred but undefeated.
Since her accident, Sam has inspired a bestselling book and major film – the number 1 box-office hit Penguin Bloom starring Naomi Watts. The movie is adapted from the international bestselling book, Penguin Bloom: The Odd Little Bird Who Saved a Family. She has also co-authored her own bestseller, has won two Oceania KL1 paracanoe championships, and is the two times Australian and World Para Surfing champion.
Sam is the Ambassador for Wings For Life, Surf Lakes and The Sapphire Project.
In 2019, Sam was nominated for the Surfing Australia Female Surfer of the Year Award, and in 2022 was awarded the Surfing Australia Female Para Surfer of the Year.
Sam, currently ranked number 1 in the world, took Gold in the first professional Adaptive World Surfing Tour event in Hawaii and is aiming for a 3rd World Title at the ISA World Para Surfing Championships in California. Win or lose, she’s committed to keep raising the profile of the sport as the global push for paralympic inclusion continues.
Today, she continues to defy the barriers in life and in sport, and inspires people around the world to do the same.

We first booked Sam Bloom at a recognition event for 350 of our top performers in 2021. Sam’s authentic delivery and her ability to convey the impact on her and her family's life in such a touching way was so well received by our delegates, it made our decision to engage the Bloom’s for our leadership’s conference series this year a very easy one. Sam delivered 8 key notes to over 1500 delegates. Sam’s keynote rated the highest session at each conference and in fact, was the highest scoring keynote from any event I have managed.Sam’s storytelling ability is genuine and raw, and when matched with Cam’s exquisite photography and videos, it takes delegates on a journey of resilience and finding the strength and passion to reach new goals. The keynote is by far the most inspirational that I have experienced. I learned something and took new inspiration from every session.I highly recommend Sam Bloom and advocate for her across the Group. Amazing, truly amazing.

Hi Sam, I cried this morning when you signed my book. Seeing both you and Penguin overcome seemingly insurmountable odds and achieve what you both have, hit me right in the heart and made me realise that with the never ending support of my incredible family and friends, who have wrapped me up in their love, I can do anything. I haven’t cried for a long time. I thought I was strong. Everyone thinks I’m strong. But nope. So – here’s to a new dawn, a new me. Thank you to you, Cameron and your beautiful boys for your inspiration and hope. I can’t thank you enough for being in Adelaide this morning. I think quite possibly, you have changed my life.
