Tom Steinfort is a multi-award winning journalist whose career has taken him around the world, covering some of the most significant stories of our generation — from the Japanese tsunami and Christchurch earthquake to the Oscar Pistorius trial and North Korea’s missile program.
Beginning his television career in 2005, Tom has become one of Australia’s most recognised and trusted news presenters. His reporting on the tragic Black Saturday bushfires earned him the Melbourne Press Club’s Young Journalist of the Year Award and a Walkley Award nomination.
In 2010, Tom relocated from Melbourne to Sydney to join A Current Affair, where he covered major international and national events including the Japanese tsunami, Christchurch earthquake and Queensland floods. He was also part of the program’s Logie-nominated investigation into abuse allegations against Robert Hughes on the set of Hey Dad..!
In 2013, Tom contributed to Nine News’ coverage of the NSW bushfire crisis, which was recognised with a Logie Award. From 2014, he served as a foreign correspondent, reporting on Donald Trump’s presidential election victory, the Paris terror attacks, Brexit, the Rio Olympics, the FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the Oscar Pistorius trial in South Africa.
Following his return to Australia, Tom joined 60 Minutes, where he became the first Australian journalist in years to gain access to North Korea, reporting from inside the hermit kingdom as its missile program escalated tensions with the United States.
In January 2019, Tom joined Today as the program’s news reader, further cementing his reputation as a calm, authoritative and engaging broadcaster.
A passionate sports fan, Tom has reported from multiple Olympic Games and FIFA World Cups, covered numerous Melbourne Cup Carnivals and State of Origin series, and completed both the New York and Melbourne marathons. A lifelong Richmond supporter, he has attended 12 AFL Grand Finals — including the club’s long-awaited premiership triumph that ended a 37-year drought.
