Stephen Brook is an accomplished journalist, podcaster, columnist and interviewer whose career has spanned more than two decades across Australia and the United Kingdom.
Having worked at The Australian, The Guardian and The Times, Stephen has reported from 11 countries and written more than 3,000 stories covering media, politics, culture, travel and lifestyle. His journalism has taken him from interviewing global figures such as Ita Buttrose, Hamish and Andy and Simon Cowell, to covering speeches by Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin and South African President Thabo Mbeki.
In Britain, Stephen served as press and publishing correspondent for The Guardian and deputy editor of MediaGuardian.co.uk, where he also occasionally hosted the Media Talk podcast. Known for his sharp analysis and fearless reporting, he once prompted a London Daily Telegraph editor to threaten to “declare war” on The Guardian. During his time in the UK, he regularly engaged with editors of London’s major daily newspapers, advertising leaders including Sir Martin Sorrell, and high-profile entertainment figures.
Back in Australia, Stephen became Media Diary columnist and media editor at The Australian, and created and hosted the Behind the Media podcast — a lively and insightful series featuring leading media personalities. He is now a regular “special guest star” on the popular TV Blackbox podcast and frequently appears on ABC Radio, ABC News Breakfast and Sky News.
Alongside his media reporting, Stephen has built a respected career in travel and lifestyle journalism. His assignments have included cycling around the temples of Angkor Wat, reviewing five-star resorts in Bali, enjoying exclusive access to Champagne houses in France, embarking on party cruises through Asia and even taking a seaweed bath in Western Ireland. His work has appeared in The Weekend Australian Magazine, Marie Claire, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun-Herald.
With quick wit, sharp intellect and extensive international experience, Stephen is a compelling MC, moderator and keynote speaker. He brings humour, insight and deep industry knowledge to conversations on media, politics, culture and the changing communications landscape.
