Sir Steve Redgrave CBE is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in Olympic history, having won an unprecedented five consecutive Olympic Gold Medals from 1984 to 2000 — a feat that remains unmatched in rowing.
In addition to his Olympic successes, Sir Steve dominated World Championships throughout his career, winning nine Gold Medals (1986, 1987, 1991, 1993–1996, 1997, 1998, 1999), including four unbeaten seasons between 1993 and 1996. Despite facing serious health challenges, including colitis and a diabetes diagnosis, he persevered to achieve his fifth consecutive Olympic Gold in Sydney, solidifying his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
Since retiring from competitive rowing, Sir Steve has remained deeply involved in the sport, mentoring Team GB athletes and working with elite performers outside of rowing, including Mo Farah. In 2018, he was appointed the Chinese Olympic Association’s first-ever National Rowing Squad Performance Director, helping the team achieve its highest-ever medal tally at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
