Paul de Gelder chased adventure from an early age, navigating a troubled youth as a self-described “hoodlum teen” before finding his path through music and eventually the military. His journey to the elite echelons of the Australian Defense Forces demonstrates his relentless pursuit of challenge and growth.
Paul’s transformation accelerated when he joined the Army paratroopers and later the even more selective Navy clearance divers, where the mantra “Improvise, Adapt, Overcome” became his life’s foundation.
In February 2009, while conducting counter-terrorism exercises in Sydney Harbor, Paul came face-to-face with his worst nightmare. A 9-foot bull shark attacked without warning, severing his right hand and leg in a violent encounter that left him swimming through his own blood. In those critical moments between life and death, Paul made a defining choice that would set the course for everything that followed—accepting his fate yet refusing to surrender his will to survive.
Drawing on the fortitude developed throughout his military career, Paul approached recovery with the same discipline that defined his service. He fought through 20 hours of excruciating pain that pain management teams couldn’t control, smashing rehabilitation milestones and amazing medical professionals with his determination. His inspiring journey from near-death to remarkable recovery, as chronicled in his autobiography “Uncaged,” redefined what’s possible when the human spirit refuses to be limited by circumstance.
Having instructed Navy divers for three and a half years after his recovery, Paul left full-time service in 2012 to embrace an even more impactful mission. His extraordinary story of resilience has taken him from the United Nations in New York to the US Navy in San Diego, from military celebrations to Fortune 500 boardrooms. As a passionate environmentalist, adventurer, and mentor to school children, Paul has transformed personal tragedy into a platform for global inspiration and positive change.
Paul’s authentic charisma and remarkable story have made him a natural media presence, appearing on major television shows across Australia and the United States. His evolution from shark attack victim to Shark Week host exemplifies his philosophy of facing fears directly—having now hosted 20 documentaries where he hand-feeds bull sharks and swims with great whites. Global celebrities like Will Smith and UFC champion Ronda Rousey have sought Paul’s mentorship, featuring him in their projects and amplifying his extraordinary impact.
In perhaps the most unexpected twist to his journey, Paul has become a passionate advocate for the very creatures that nearly ended his life. His deep respect for sharks and commitment to their conservation demonstrates his remarkable capacity for perspective and purpose. Paul extended this advocacy to wildlife protection by joining anti-poaching teams in Africa, documenting their crucial work in the NatGeo special “FEARLESS”—further proof that his commitment to making a difference transcends personal experience.
2026 sees him guide celebrities through a high-stakes journey on a new series Shark! This heart-pounding new series will see these familiar Aussie faces enter the water with some of the most frightening species known to humans. In this bold and life-changing new show, Paul attempts to guide them to overcome their fears – by swimming in shark infested waters.
