Mal is one of rugby league’s most respected figures, with a 16-year playing career distinguished by countless accolades and leadership roles at club, state and national level. Widely regarded as one of the game’s greats, he was inducted as a Rugby League Immortal in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the sport.
Transitioning seamlessly into coaching, Mal led the Canberra Raiders for five years before embarking on a decade-long tenure as coach of the Queensland rugby league team. Under his leadership, Queensland enjoyed the most successful period in its history. Since 2016, Mal has also served as head coach of the Australian Kangaroos, continuing his influence at the highest level of the game.
Following his playing career, Mal has been in strong demand as a consultant, mentor, coach, public speaker and media personality. Whether on the sporting field or in the boardroom, he works with teams and individuals to drive high performance and sustainable success.
Drawing on his elite coaching experience and postgraduate study in business management, Mal has developed a values-driven leadership framework designed to uncover an organisation’s cultural DNA. This process aligns vision, purpose and behaviour, embedding shared values across teams and creating the foundations for a lasting and successful legacy.
In 2019, Mal joined the Gold Coast Titans as High Performance Senior Advisor, where he has played a pivotal role in shaping the club’s culture, strengthening its vision and supporting long-term performance outcomes.
Beyond sport, Mal is director and co-founder of First Nations consultancy Regional Economic Solutions, working with government and non-government organisations to advance Indigenous leadership, engagement and economic opportunity.
His contributions have been widely recognised. Mal is a Member of the Order of Australia, an Australian High Achiever of the Year, and has been inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. He is also a proud Australian South Sea Islander.
