Magda Szubanski is an award-winning actor, writer and activist whose work has made her a household name in Australia and internationally. She has created and performed in some of the country’s most iconic television shows and films, including Kath and Kim, Fast Forward, D-Generation, Big Girl’s Blouse and Babe, earning the Fred Parsons Award for Outstanding Contribution to Australian Comedy at the 2019 AWGIES.
In addition to her acting, Magda is a bestselling, award-winning author. Her 2015 memoir, Reckoning, which explores her family history, intergenerational trauma and journey as a young gay woman, received critical acclaim and multiple literary awards including the 2016 ABIA Book of the Year.
Magda has been a prominent public advocate for LGBTI+ rights, particularly during Australia’s Marriage Equality campaign, where she became a key voice in media, rallies and national debates. She was recognised for her efforts with the Liberty Victoria Voltaire Award for Free Speech and continues to speak on issues of courage, equality and social justice.
A regular contributor to television programs such as The Project, Sunrise, ABC Breakfast, A Current Affair, The Morning Show and Studio 10, Magda is equally at home on stage, having appeared in major productions including Guys and Dolls, Grease: The Arena Spectacular and A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.
Magda also actively supports numerous charities, including Very Special Kids, Starlight Foundation, Oxfam and the Royal Children’s Hospital. Her speaking engagements draw on her unique blend of humour, insight and personal experience, addressing topics such as courage, resilience, social justice and the transformative power of storytelling.
