John Dengate is a renowned environmentalist, media naturalist, author, and TV personality, passionate about sharing his knowledge of plants, animals, and the environment. For over two decades, he presented wildlife talkback segments on ABC Radio and contributed environmental and wildlife stories to the long-running Burke’s Backyard TV show.
John spent 30 years explaining the work of state environment agencies, retiring in 2009 as Head of Public Affairs at the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change. During this time, he helped place environmental awareness at the forefront of corporate and public life. In recognition of his contributions to public understanding of conservation, he was awarded the Public Service Medal of the Order of Australia in 2009.
An accomplished author, John has written books and numerous articles on natural history and environmental management, including Attracting Birds to Your Garden in Australia and Tiny Game Hunting: Environmentally Healthy Ways to Trap and Rid the Pests. He has also served as councillor of the Royal Australian Ornithological Union, patron of the Cumberland Bird Observers Club, and led ecotourism programs in Australia and overseas.
