Greg ‘Champs’ Champion is one of Australia’s most beloved and distinctive entertainers — a singer–songwriter, country and folk musician, corporate performer, musical comedian, radio personality and event host. Best known as the undisputed “King of footy tunes”, Greg is Australia’s leading writer of AFL and cricket songs, with several much-loved sporting anthems to his name.
With a career spanning more than three decades, Greg captures the spirit of Australia through his trademark blend of comedy, sports parodies and heartfelt country–folk storytelling. His ability to connect with audiences of all ages — from sporting clubs to corporate boardrooms — has made him a sought-after entertainer and MC for major events nationwide.
Greg’s musical journey began in the early 1980s as frontman for the innovative Melbourne bands The Fabulaires and The Young Homebuyers, performing alongside celebrated Australian artists including Wayne Burt, JJ Hackett, Wayne Duncan and Ross Hannaford.
In 1983 he joined the now-iconic Coodabeen Champions, becoming a fixture on commercial and ABC radio for more than 30 years. His breakout hit I Made a 100 in the Backyard at Mum’s (1986) cemented his national profile, featuring as the lead track on the hugely successful Australia All Over album, which sold more than 150,000 copies.
His anthem That’s The Thing About Football became Channel 7’s AFL broadcast theme in 1995 and remains one of the most recognisable sporting songs in the country. Greg has continued to write fan favourites including Crickets on the Radio, earning a devoted following among sports lovers.
Beyond sport, Greg has built a respected country music career, renowned for his evocative storytelling and authentic depictions of Australian life. Since releasing his debut album in 1990, he has produced an impressive 25 albums, including his 2013 release A Whole Different Story.
