Geoff ‘Henry’ Lawson is one of Australia’s most outstanding cricketers, known for a career described as superb, brave, colourful and, at times, controversial. Debuting for the NSW Blues in 1977-78, Geoff went on to take a record 395 wickets in 367 Sheffield Shield games, finishing as the second highest wicket-taker in Shield history at the time of his retirement. He represented Australia in 46 Test matches and 80 One-Day Internationals, taking 180 Test wickets and earning accolades such as Player of the Series against England and Pakistan.
Lawson captained NSW 40 times between 1988-89 and 1991-92, pioneering a bold and widely admired leadership style that brought crowds back to the SCG and influenced the playing style of future Australian teams. He holds the rare distinction of declaring a team’s first innings closed at 0-0, a testament to his strategic thinking on the field.
For his contributions to cricket and the community, Geoff has been awarded the Order of Australia Medal (1990), Australian Sports Medal (2002), and a Centenary Medal, and is a life member of the New South Wales Cricket Association. Beyond cricket, he has a degree in Optometry, is pursuing an MBA at the Australian Graduate School of Management, and has served in numerous leadership and advisory roles, including on the NRMA Member Services Board, Sydney Cricket Ground/Sydney Football Stadium Trust, and UNSW Council.
Geoff is also an experienced broadcaster and writer, having commentated for ABC Radio, Channel Nine, Fox Sports and C7, appeared on the pay TV panel show At The Wicket, and written columns and features for the Sydney Morning Herald, Sun Herald and cricket publications in Australia, England and India.
