David Smorgon is a respected lawyer, successful businessman, and highly regarded leader in both the business and sporting worlds. For 25 years, he served as a senior executive at Smorgon Consolidated Industries, the $1 billion family business spanning meat, paper, glass, plastics, and steel. Following the staged divestment of the business in 1995, David turned his focus to the sporting world, becoming President of the Footscray Football Club (now the Western Bulldogs). Under his leadership, the club achieved significant success on and off the field, with David serving 16 years as president—the second-longest tenure in AFL history.
In 1996, David and his three sons founded Generation Investments, focusing on business, equity, and property opportunities. He later established PointMade, a consultancy that helps senior executives professionalise their presentation and speaking skills. David also served as the inaugural Chairman of Family Business Australia from 1997 to 2003, providing guidance and mentorship to family businesses nationwide.
David’s contributions extend to community and philanthropic initiatives. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2000 for his service to the Western Bulldogs and to the community through health, social welfare, and education. In 2008, he became an ambassador for Ochre, supporting Indigenous child health through art, raising funds for research at Charles Darwin University’s Menzies School of Health Research.
A captivating and authentic speaker, David shares his insights on business success, resilience, teamwork, leadership, and overcoming adversity. Drawing on decades of experience in business and sport, he offers audiences practical lessons and inspiration grounded in real-world achievement.
