Bruce ‘Hoppo’ Hopkins is one of Australia’s most experienced and recognisable water safety authorities, with more than 30 years of frontline lifeguarding experience and a national reputation for drowning prevention and public education.

Hoppo is the Head Lifeguard at Bondi Beach, one of the world’s busiest and most challenging beaches, where he has been directly involved in thousands of rescues across rip currents, mass rescue events, extreme weather conditions, and critical medical emergencies.

His operational experience gives him a deep understanding of how people behave in the water when panic sets in — knowledge that underpins his strong advocacy for practical, life-saving responses. He is also widely known for his long-standing role on the hit television series Bondi Rescue, which has aired for more than two decades in Australia and internationally. Through the program, Hoppo has helped educate millions of viewers worldwide about surf safety, rip currents, and real-life rescues, making water safety messaging accessible to audiences far beyond the beach.

In addition to his operational role, Hoppo is the President of the Australian Pools & Ocean Lifeguard Association (APOLA), where he represents professional lifeguards nationally and works closely with councils, government agencies and emergency services to improve safety standards, training, and public education. Hoppo is a leading advocate for the Float to Survive drowning-prevention message, which encourages people who find themselves in trouble in deep water or rip currents to stop struggling, remain calm and float to conserve energy and keep their airway above water.

The message is now endorsed nationally and internationally by water safety and rescue organisations. He also works in partnership with Belgravia Leisure, delivering water safety education through school programs, aquatic centres, and community outreach initiatives across Australia. Through these programs, Hoppo helps teach children and adults practical survival skills that can be used in real-world situations. Extending his advocacy beyond the coastline, Hoppo has partnered with Carnival Cruise Line to promote water safety awareness to local lifeguards, reinforcing key safety messages to assist families and travellers engaging with aquatic environments while on holiday in locations such as Vanuatu.

A trusted and highly credible media spokesperson, Hoppo regularly appears across television, radio and print, providing expert commentary during peak summer periods and following major water safety incidents. His calm, authoritative communication style makes him a go-to expert for broadcasters seeking clear, practical guidance for audiences.

Bruce ‘Hoppo’ Hopkins is driven by a single objective: to reduce drowning deaths through education, awareness and simple actions that work when seconds matter.
