More about Mark Middleton:

Since joining Grimshaw's in 1996, Mark has worked on projects in many different sectors; including leisure, commercial property and transportation; and is noted for providing leadership and creative direction to many of the practice's award-winning rail and aviation projects. He was instrumental in establishing Grimshaw's preeminent position in these sectors, working on large-scale projects such as Heathrow Terminal 2b, station redevelopments at Reading, Paddington, Crewe and the Fulton Center in New York City.

Most notably Mark was partner in charge of the development of a £1bn redevelopment of London Bridge Station, completed in May 2018. This city-changing project won a host of awards in 2019 including AJ Building of the Year and the World Architecture Festival's Best Transport Project. It was subsequently nominated for the RIBA Stirling Prize. He also led the design for Southern Cross Station in Melbourne, which won the RIBA Lubetkin Prize in 2007 and helped establish Grimshaw's presence in Australia.

His aviation experience includes masterplans for new runways and facilities at Stansted and Heathrow, and led the winning team for the Pulkovo Airport design in St Petersburg in 2007, which opened to the public in 2014. He also contributed to developing the roof and envelope concept for the New Istanbul Airport which opened in 2019. Mark has achieved global recognition for his work across the rail, metro and aviation sectors and is currently a board member of the British Aviation Group trade body, which represents and promotes member interests internationally.

His work extends beyond the transportation sector - Mark led designs for the Oman Botanic Garden and its two biomes (much like Grimshaw's Eden Project) and is scheduled to open in 2022; Thermae Bath Spa completed in 2002; a concept for a covered surf dome in Berlin, and; the current early-stage Ah Dhann Geothermal Distillery in Cornwall.

He also has many years of experience as a senior practice leader alongside his architectural work, and successfully led the London studio as Managing Partner between 2012-2018, during which time headcount and net revenue grew by over 50%.
