Bernie Hobbs

ABC Science Writer, Broadcaster and Host

Bernie Hobbs is an award winning science writer and presenter. Since 1997, she has been talking and writing about her great passion for science, the environment and medicine at the ABC.

Bernie built her reputation as a popular judge on ABC TV's The New Inventors. Since then, she has worked extensively in television (Catalyst, the experiMENTALS), on radio and online. She co-presents the podcast Dear Science with Dr Alice Williamson.

With a rare combination of a sharp intellect, quick wit and warmth, Bernie is also a popular facilitator and chair for corporate, government, and industry events. With a background in medical research, environmental writing and, of course, science teaching, she can tackle tough or technical subjects and bring the driest topics alive for lay or expert audiences.

Bernie has worked with kids, animals and rocket scientists, and shared the stage with prime ministers and rock stars. She has MC'd and chaired forums and events for clients including: Prime Minister's Prizes for Science, the Association of Consulting Engineers Australia, a swathe of CRCs, GHD, Queerscreen, the Queensland Government, The Queensland Resources Council, CSIRO, The Australian Society of Medical Research, The Australian Fodder Industry Association, Brisbane Ideas Festival, The World Congress of Science Journalists, and Questacon, to name just some.

Bernie, who has a first class honours degree in biochemistry and microbiology, has won awards for experiMENTALS, the ABC's kids TV science show, and for her infamous greenhouse website Planet Slayer where you find out what age you should have died at so you don't use more than your share of the planet. Undoubedtly, she puts the fun into the fundamentals of science.

Client testimonials

Bernie was very well received by all. We had an overwhelming response to attend this year's dinner, a maximum capacity of 662 gusts. Apart from the event being the 10th anniversary of the Prizes, we believe having Bernie Hobbs as MC was contributory to the enthusiastic turnout as everyone who attended last year enjoyed her performance, and returned for more. Bernie is a special person and has a special chemistry with participants on stage. Bernie is a delight to work with.
