John McGrath is considered one of the most influential figures in the Australian property industry. As Chief Executive of McGrath Estate Agents, he took the company from a start-up in 1988 to one of Australia's most successful residential real estate groups, selling $5.7 billion in residential property in Sydney in FY11.
A total solution company, McGrath Estate Agents has offices located throughout Sydney, the Central and North Coasts, Southern Highlands, the Blue Mountains, Wollongong, Canberra and the Gold Coast, as part of its growing franchise network.
John McGrath has become a spokesperson for the industry both in Australia and internationally. He has five books that have reached bestseller status including You Don't Have To Be Born Brilliant and You Inc. In The Ultimate Guide to Real Estate, John shares with the reader his invaluable knowledge on the Australian property market.
In October 2008, John McGrath was honoured by the Real Estate Institute of NSW with the Woodrow Weight OBE Award, a lifetime achievement award for his outstanding contribution to the real estate industry. In September 2002, John won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the Services category in the country's eastern region. In April 2003, he was awarded a Centenary Medal for service to business.
John was again recognised as an industry leader with his appointment as Chairman to Australia's most popular real estate Internet site, realestate.com.au., (2003- 2007). In his four years as Chairman, John presided over its transformation from a single residential website in Australia to one that operates 15 residential and commercial real estate websites in eight countries. He remains as a Director.
About John McGrath:
John commenced his real estate career as a rental clerk at age 18. He worked four part-time jobs and studied three nights a week to gain his real estate and auctioneering licences by 20, when he started his career selling real estate.
Within four years he had established a number of national real estate sales records including the sale of Australia's most expensive home at the time for $11.25 million.
He founded McGrath Estate Agents in 1989 - operating the business from his lounge room for the first three months. Today McGrath Estate Agents is Australia's largest privately owned real estate group.
The company became the first real estate company to be ranked on BRW's Fastest-Growing Private Companies List and is a four-time recipient of BRW's Fast 100. In 2001, Westpac Bank purchased a 20% stake in McGrath Estate Agents.
