Bruce Yardley

Former Australian test cricketed, international cricket coach, speaker & MC

Bruce Yardley's contribution to cricket not only in Western Australia, but on a national and international scale is well known and highly respected.

He is regarded as one of the two best off-spinners Australian cricket has produced.

Bruce played 33 tests for Australia between 1978 and 1983.  He took 126 wickets with best figures of 7 for 98, and scored 1,000 runs. He played 59 first class matches for Western Australia in a career that spanned from 1966 to 1989.  As a wily off-spinner he captured 75 wickets on a WACA pitch that favoured fast bowlers, and made 1579 runs with a top score of 97.

As a player, coach and motivational speaker Bruce has toured the West Indies, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, UK, New Zealand, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Singapore and Canada.

Bruce's outstanding cricket abilities were recognised in 1982 when he was named International Cricketer of the Year.

Since retiring from competitive cricket Bruce has still been involved in the sport as a coach and media commentator.  In 1997 he was appointed coach of the national SRI LANKAN team who were on a downward slide after winning the 1996 World Cup.  Bruce arrested this slump after only two months in the job - a testament to his extraordinary ability to motivate.  He has also worked extensively with Sri Lankan record breaking off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan.

Bruce also recently spent several years as Regional Cricket Officer for Western Australian Cricket Association which involved responsibility for promoting cricket and increasing participation in the South West region through school visits/programs and cricket carnivals. This role also included identifying and nurturing talented young players and one-on-one coaching. He is also a regular cricket commentator on TV and radio.

Bruce is a much sought after corporate speaker who has many interesting and amusing experiences to relate.  He has addressed corporate, government and sporting events in most Australian states, and overseas.  Bruce has an excellent sense of humour and his witty dialogue will enthrall, motivate and entertain any audience whether they are interested in cricket or not.

He has a range of presentations which he can tailor to suit any event theme. These include Keep It Simple, Practice Your Skills, Eyes on the Ball, Play through the Srike Zone.  Bruce invites you to a lighthearted insight of what makes it happen for him in sport, business and everyday life.

Thank you Bruce for being such an excellent speaker for the 2007 Warren Jones Youth Regatta Gala Luncheon. The event was a great success due in no small part to your wonderful contribution as guest speaker.

C.M. Lissiman OAM, Executive Officer, Warren Jones International Regatta

Bruce, Your speech for our 71st annual conference dinner was thoroughly humorous and you had the audience enthralled with your wit and mannerisms. You had great interaction with the audience and captivated and controlled what is essentially a very difficult crowd to please. Your attention to the unique sense of humour of police officers was certainly a contributing factor toward the success of this delivery. This annual event has seen many speakers over the years but only a select few have had a resonating effect on the audience as I believe yours has. I would be pleased to recommend your services as a speaker for other occasions, and will be happy to provide a personal testimonial if required.

Michael Dean, General President, Western Australian Police Union.
