Monica Attard is one of Australia’s most respected news and current affairs journalists. She holds five Walkley Awards including a Gold Walkley for Excellence in Journalism.
Monica Attard is the acclaimed presenter of the nationally broadcasted program, Sunday Profile on ABC Radio where she talks to people in the news about the news. Sunday Profile focuses on key issues in Australia, providing listeners with detailed analysis of stories, background information and key interviews with major players.
Monica Attard’s guests on Sunday Profile have included the founder of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital Dr Catherine Hamlin, Dr Alan Trounson, Sheikh Taj el-Din al-Hilali, John Elliott, Cardinal George Pell, Rove McManus, Jose Ramos Horta, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Justice Ian Callinan.
A lawyer, author and journalist, Monica Attard has worked with ABC for over twenty five years. She earned a reputation for excellence in journalism when she spent four years as Russian Correspondent for the ABC, reporting on the collapse of the Soviet Union. Her work in Russia, which saw her reporting in her pyjamas astride a Russian tank in Red Square, was recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia.
Monica Attard presented Media Watch on ABC TV for two years and was a presenter of the national radio current affairs programs PM and The World Today. Monica also worked as a news and current affairs reporter for AM, 2JJJ, 2GB, 2WS and served for four years as a news reporter for Channel 7. Monica’s entry into the industry was as a researcher and segment producer for Four Corners before becoming a reporter for Lateline.
Some of the major events Monica has covered in her career include: the fall of the Marcos Regime, the Fiji Coups, the last year of Mikhail Gorbachev’s rule, the 1991 attempted coup against him, the rise of Boris Yeltsin’s capitalism and the subsequent 1993 uprising against him, and the beginning of Soviet reform.
